Quick overview – compare the process differences between porcelain and composite

The process varies slightly for composite veneers as it’s a one-step procedure, as opposed to porcelain veneers, which will typically spread the process over three appointments.

Here’s exactly what to expect:

You begin with a cosmetic consultation and smile analysis

Every veneer patient begins with an in-depth consultation with cosmetic dentist Dr Lavington, who will use this time to assess your teeth, oral health, bite, and consider the balance of your facial features. Dr Lavington will also discuss your goals and concerns in detail to recommend the right treatment solution (porcelain or composite), determine the right number of veneers, and show you what’s possible with digital smile previews. Once we have all of this in place, we’ll be able to accurately price up your smile makeover.

Next, from our findings, we’ll digitally design your smile

Using state-of-the-art digital scanners, we’ll capture thousands of 3D scans of your teeth, which allow us to:

  • Create a detailed simulation of your future smile
  • Adjust tooth shape, size and symmetry digitally
  • Harmonise your veneers with your facial proportions
  • Plan minimal or no-prep veneer designs
  • Ensure predictable results

Patients love this stage because they get to see an accurate digital mock-up of their final smile before moving forward. This will be your chance to approve what your new smile will look like before we give the go-ahead to the laboratory to begin handcrafting your veneers.

Moving onto mock-up models and trial smiles

Your approved digital designs are then sent to the local dental laboratory, where an expert ceramist will wax-up a model of your new smile, which will serve as a physical representation of how your new teeth will look.

From this wax-up, we’ll craft your trial smile, which is a temporary prosthetic that will fit over your natural teeth comfortably and closely mimic what the final results will look like. You can consider this stage as your “try-on” phase, where you can make any final adjustments to how the veneers look, feel, function and fit.

You’ll wear your Trial Smile for a few days to:

  • See your new smile in real life
  • Test it when speaking, chewing and smiling
  • Experience its proportions and aesthetics
  • Provide feedback on any refinements you’d like

This step ensures there are no surprises and complete approval before your permanent veneers are made.

Preparing your smile for veneers

As your smile is meticulously designed in advance, tooth preparation is conservative and often minimal. Typically, our cosmetic dentists will only remove a small amount of enamel by polishing the tooth to make room for the veneer. For example, if your veneer is 0.3mm thick, we’ll only need to remove 0.3mm of enamel for secure bonding. In some cases, no preparation is required at all.

When we use composite veneers, no tooth preparation or reduction is often not required.

Making your final veneers

Every veneer is custom-built to mimic the depth and vitality of real enamel, and our master ceramist will hand-design your veneers to achieve layered opacities, natural translucencies, micro-textures and subtle edge details that make your veneer unique to you.

If you opt for composite veneers, Dr Lavington sculpts the veneers chairside in a single appointment.

Placing your veneers

Once your veneers are ready, you’ll return for your fitting appointment.

During this visit, we:

  • Try in each veneer
  • Check harmony, bite and symmetry
  • Make any tiny adjustments
  • Bond the veneers permanently (only removable by a dentist) in place

You’ll leave with a fully transformed smile — immediately.
