My long journey to reverse sun damage

Like many, I’ve always loved being outdoors in Cayman, the sun, the warmth. Growing up by the seaside meant I was always at the beach, but regrettably, I only wore sunscreen when I remembered, always forgot to reapply, had burned my skin many times and never really put much thought into aftercare.

When you’re younger, you don’t really put too much thought into how your skin will look or be affected in the future.

Getting older revealed dark spots, pigmentation breaks, and more wrinkles. My skin was not like it used to be, and it wasn’t just down to ageing. It was sun damage.

sun damage on skin

Skincare did little to fix it; understanding how it worked was essential

Sun damage is more than just wrinkles and freckles. UV exposure affects the skin at a deeper level, including changes in pigmentation, loss of elasticity, and rougher skin texture.

And even if, unlike me, you haven’t spent decades in the sun, cumulative exposure leaves long-lasting marks, and once it’s there, it can’t be washed off. Because prevention is not always enough. I’ve had to learn that the hard way. Sunscreen alone isn’t enough.

Typical of Cayman Islands residents: sun damage builds slowly; by the time it becomes visible, it’s too late. The effects are already set in the skin, which is why treatment has to focus on repairing it rather than just protecting it.

Treatments to reverse sun damage to explore

Clinics like Aventis recommend addressing sun damage by combining medical aesthetic treatments, such as skin resurfacing, with hydration to restore tone, texture, and elasticity.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments to try

A new piece of kit is the Moxi Laser, which stimulates collagen while gently targeting pigmentation, resulting in brighter, smoother skin that’s improved in tone.

Unlike other harsh resurfacing treatments, Moxi is gentler, allowing for minimal downtime and ideal for those who want noticeable results without waiting weeks.

Next, explore skin boosters for hydration and elasticity

Game-changer treatment, Profhilo works beneath the skin’s surface to remodel and rehydrate, supporting long-term elasticity and resilience. A few sessions are recommended to make skin feel plumper, smoother, and more radiant overall.

At home, you can upgrade your skincare

Medical-grade skincare products, such as serums and creams, that contain the right balance of retinoids, antioxidants, and peptides help repair cellular damage and maintain results by protecting against future UV-induced stress.
