Chemical Peels Vs Laser Treatment overview

When it comes to non-invasive skin rejuvenation, both treatments diminish imperfections by removing layers of the skin to promote skin renewal – and as they both treat the same issues, it can be difficult for patients to decide between them.

Compare both treatments at a glance:

Feature Laser Resurfacing Chemical Peels
Best for Sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, acne scars and uneven skin texture Pigmentation, dull skin, fine lines and uneven skin tone
How it works Uses laser energy to resurface the skin and stimulate collagen production Uses a chemical solution to exfoliate damaged skin and encourage cell turnover
Results Improves skin texture, tone and firmness Brighter, smoother and more even-looking skin
Downtime Varies depending on the laser, from minimal to around one week Usually several days of visible peeling
Treatment course Typically 1-3 treatments Typically a course of 3-6 peels
Longevity Long-lasting with good skincare and sun protection Long-lasting with maintenance treatments

What you really need to compare

In the trendy, modern world, patients go crazy for laser technology. It’s new, exciting and achieves everything they want. But older therapies, like chemical peels, can still compete – and for epidermal facial issues, they’re just as good.

So, as both treatments improve skin tone, texture and fine lines, choosing between them often boils down to process, recovery and cost.

Dr Imogen Bexfield, our lead aesthetic doctor at Aventis in Cayman, dives deeper into the science and processes below, comparing chemical peeling and laser treatment for facial and skin issues, so you can find which treatment suits you best.

The key differences

Although the end goal is similar, the treatment experience can be very different.

Precision

  • Laser resurfacing is adjusted to target specific concerns, treatment areas and depth, making it better for treating pigmentation, redness and areas that require precise correction.
  • Chemical peels treat an entire area where the solution is applied, making it a better option for improving overall skin tone and complexion.

Downtime

  • Laser resurfacing downtime depends on the type of laser used. The MOXI laser, for example, causes redness and a rough sandpaper texture for a few days. While the BBL has very little downtime, pigmentation lesions darken before flaking away.
  • Chemical peels begin to peel around 2-3 days after treatment and can continue for around a week, where the skin gradually sheds damaged cells to reveal fresher skin underneath.

Results

  • Laser resurfacing results develop gradually, with improvements happening over several months following a course of treatment.
  • Chemical peels show results typically after a week once the peeling has finished, providing smoother skin relatively quickly. But a course of treatments is best to produce long-term results.

Treatment experience

  • Laser resurfacing feels warm and like a rubber band snapping against the skin, similar to a sunburn.
  • During chemical peels, the peeling stage can feel tingly or warm, with mild stinging when the solution is active.
